This article will explain the different ways that files and folders can be sorted within the MuniDocs Upload feature.
Sort by Name
By default, MuniDocs files and folders are sorted alphanumerically by name.
Sort by Date
Users who prefer to sort documents by date instead of by file name can use the Sort Date option. When added to a file, a Sort Date will override the file name as the default sort.
In general, MuniDocs folders can only be sorted alphanumerically by folder name. However, folders that have only a four-digit year as their name (for example, "1999") will automatically have a sort date of January 1st of that year. This allows these folders to appear at the top of a Table of Contents ahead of any folders with other alphanumeric names.
MuniDocs files can be sorted in order of descending date. When uploading a document, simply populate the Sort Date field with a corresponding date and that field will take precedence over the file name when sorting.
Sort Dates can be added manually by the user or automatically by the upload tool. For information on how to add a Sort Date manually, see the Edit a Document section of the Upload, Edit, and Delete a Document article. See the Sort Date Detection section below for information on how Sort Dates can be applied automatically.
Sort Date Detection
If the file name of the document you are uploading contains a date in a certain format, the system will automatically detect the date and populate the Sort Date field for you. The upload tool recognizes many different date patterns, such as the ones included in the example file names below:
- munidoc_1-2-03.doc
- 2003-1-2 munidoc.doc
- 01-16-2018.pdf
- 01_16_2018.docx
- January 1st 2018.pdf
- 1 January 18.doc
- munidoc 01-2018.docx
If these date patterns are detected anywhere in the file name, MuniDocs will recognize them and populate the date field automatically.
