Even though every local government is very different, there are usually some issues that another municipality or entity has already dealt with. In some situations, other municipalities may have adopted an ordinance that has worked well and would also work for your municipality, so you plan to adopt it too.
When you find your municipality in this scenario, and plan to adopt something you received from another city, or use a model Code provision, be sure to:
- Read thoroughly through the whole thing and make changes where necessary, paying close attention to changing the municipality’s name to yours
- Ensure it doesn’t conflict with your own municipality’s laws or regulations, and make adjustments as they may occur
- Make sure it does not contain a sneaky reference to an internal citation (or cross-reference) of another municipality, or another county, or to state law
